Digital Music Wars

Apple Inc. with its Itunes offering proved there was money in digital music, and given the right circumstances, people will be willing to buy and pay by the song. Having successfully proven the concept, it is now under siege from a number of players including heavy weights like amazon.com and Wallmart. The company is also losing partners such as NBC (for video downloads) due to there instance on a uniform a rigid pricing model. Universal Music is the latest partner lost by Apple because of its policy, and the company is teeming up with likes of Sony BMG Entertainment, and possibly the Warner Music Group to start their own online presence. Already Amazon.com unbox is offering DRM free music which allows songs to be used on a multitude of portable players and third-party software. Hopefully with all this the end consumer will win out...or will they?
